Make another movie, regardless \u2014 with an imposter-killer \u2014 and hope for the best. That\u2019s what happened here, except for that \u201cbest\u201d part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s been five years since Tommy Jarvis chopped Jason to death. The traumatized kid, now 17 years old, has spent that time in mental facilities, and we catch up to him as he\u2019s being transferred to the Pinehurst Youth Development Center, a halfway house for troubled teens. Is Tommy ready to re-enter polite society? Oh, hell no. Exhibiting bouts of intense rage is the norm for this mostly silent and somewhat creepy Tommy \u2014 and rage isn\u2019t a good look when Jason Voorhees is apparently back from the dead. Or does it only <em>seem<\/em> to be Jason?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Tommy-Knife.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7134\" width=\"358\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Tommy-Knife.png 574w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Tommy-Knife-300x178.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When annoying Pinehurst resident Joey Burns is hacked to death by yet another troubled youth at the facility, it sparks a series of violent murders apparently committed by a dude in a hockey mask. It\u2019s not <em>quite<\/em> Jason\u2019s mask (which has red stripes vs. this one\u2019s blue accents), but it\u2019s close enough, right? And Tommy is crazy, right??\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every ten minutes, another half-baked, unlikable character gets offed, and while there\u2019s a brief red herring in the form of drifter Raymond Joffroy, Tommy does indeed seem to be the culprit \u2014 until the final act. That\u2019s when the young Jarvis arrives on the scene just as \u201cJason\u201d is chasing Pinehurst\u2019s assistant manager Pam and the ever-shrieking Reggie, grandson of the halfway house\u2019s cook. If Scooby-Doo had a death-reveal it would play out like this, with fake-Jason impaled on the spikes of a tractor harrow, hockey mask asunder \u2014 as well as the Jason flesh mask he remarkably wore <em>under<\/em> it. The killer\u2019s identity is identity revealed as Roy Burns, paramedic and vengeful father of the late, chocolate-stained Joey. And he would\u2019ve gotten away with it, if not for that meddling Tommy Jarvis! \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Fake-Jason.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7138\" width=\"363\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Fake-Jason.jpg 750w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Fake-Jason-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Tommy is innocent after all. At least until the last minute of the film where, recovering from his wounds at the hospital, he grabs a knife, dons Roy\u2019s faux-Jason mask (both from his bedside table) and masked-up, prepares to murder Pam, essentially striking the same note as the end of the previous movie.\u00a0 \u201cTommy is the new Jason,\u201d rinse, lather, repeat.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was bound to happen. Welcome to the first stinker of the bunch. Jason is officially, biologically dead, so what do you do now? Easy. You hire a porn director (seriously that\u2019s what they did), throw together a lazy script, and crank out a quick sequel which miraculously makes enough money that it doesn\u2019t kill the series altogether (that said, the poor performance of this one negatively impacted its pretty terrific follow-up). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A pre-credit dream sequence \u2014 where Corey Feldman returns as young Tommy Jarvis for a scene foreshadowing the opening moments of the <em>next<\/em> movie \u2014 is fun, but as a <em>Friday the 13th<\/em>, it\u2019s mostly downhill after that.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Young-Tommy.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7140\" width=\"366\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Young-Tommy.jpg 1008w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Young-Tommy-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Young-Tommy-768x493.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 366px) 100vw, 366px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem lies with the characters, who are tied up in the knot of the premise. It\u2019s a halfway house for socially dysfunctional kids \u2014 nobody likes each other, which makes nobody <em>likable<\/em>. The kids are antisocial nothings, which makes it more than easy to watch them die; it\u2019s a blessing to be rid of \u2019em. But, on the plus side, there <em>is<\/em> Demon\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Demon, older brother of the aggressively annoying Reggie (a.k.a. \u201cReggie the Reckless\u201d) is a leather-clad bad-boy and one of the few Black actors to wander through Crystal Lake (this movie does well in the diversity department, so points for that). In his brief time on screen, he\u2019s engaging and funny to watch. He\u2019s also <em>another<\/em> character who poops and dies with a dirty butt. Really, why is that a thing in this series??<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Demon.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7142\" width=\"370\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Demon.png 637w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Demon-300x187.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there\u2019s Ethel Hubbard and her son Junior, two filthy hillbillies (yep, hillbillies). When I first saw this movie, I hated them sooooo much! I don\u2019t do well with comedic characters in my horror movies, and these two are living cartoons. But now I just want to give Ethel a big hug. She\u2019s always pissed off and every sentence is peppered with one or two \u201cfucks.\u201d It\u2019s a rare instance where a comic relief character helps the viewing experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Ethel.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7143\" width=\"341\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Ethel.jpg 1005w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Ethel-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Ethel-768x506.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 341px) 100vw, 341px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, two leather-clad boys \u2014 looking like they fled a gay bar in 1958 \u2014 show up, talk to no one but each other, and make no difference to anything that happens aside from adding to the massive body count. As Alice said in the first movie, \u201c<em>WHAT is going on\u2026???<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This Tommy recast (the first of two), as portrayed by John Shepard, barely speaks \u2014 but he does a good job of playing frantic, which is all that\u2019s required. And with Tommy being 17, the timeline puts us in 1989 (which is four years into the future of this 1985 release).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The kills are quick and edited down to nothing \u2014 or they happen off-camera, thanks to the MPAA and a nationwide clutching of pearls. But hey, kids, there\u2019s cocaine-usage and we get titties, so your mommas can sleep soundly at night!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Eddie-1024x653.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7145\" width=\"364\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Eddie-1024x653.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Eddie-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Eddie-768x490.jpg 768w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Eddie.jpg 1087w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 364px) 100vw, 364px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Pam isn\u2019t the worst final girl, but she\u2019s as bland as Styrofoam and completely forgettable. Still, the big \u201cJason\u201d chase is solid, except for Reggie\u2019s endless screaming. Missed opportunity: stuffing Reggie in a meat grinder \u2014 I\u2019d pay Broadway prices for that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So<em> is<\/em> Tommy the new Jason? They try hard to make us <em>think<\/em> he is. But he isn\u2019t. Jason is Roy. That is, until the end, when Jason is Tommy. Maybe. And if you interpret the final scene as a dream, which is entirely fair, it doesn\u2019t matter. Ultimately, none of this matters. They drop the whole thing and never mention it again. The cliffhanger is never resolved (but I suspect Pam is fine; if it even happened, she probably just talked Tommy into putting down the knife). Fake-Jason\/Roy Burns is never addressed again, either. In fact, this whole movie can be skipped because the 4th and 6th entries flow cleanly into each other. It\u2019s worth seeing because it\u2019s so bad \u2014 and it\u2019s not the even the worst one!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Ending-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7147\" width=\"363\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Ending-1.png 608w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-5-Ending-1-300x166.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Favorite moment: Every word out of Ethel\u2019s mouth, you big dildo!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/jason_lives_poster.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7149\" width=\"388\" height=\"97\" srcset=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/jason_lives_poster.jpeg 790w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/jason_lives_poster-300x76.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/jason_lives_poster-768x194.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 388px) 100vw, 388px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The One with Zombie Jason<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember how the last movie ended? It doesn\u2019t matter. After the disappointing mess of <em>A New Beginning<\/em>, the series bounces back in a big way \u2014 by almost completely ignoring the events of <em>A New Beginning<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tommy Jarvis has been institutionalized for years, and now he\u2019s returned to Crystal Lake (renamed &#8220;Forest Green&#8221; after a million murders) to make sure that Jason is really, truly dead. So he digs up his grave and, through various hijinks involving a metal fence and lightning, succeeds in <em>resurrecting<\/em> Jason Voorhees. He even had the courtesy to bring along Jason\u2019s hockey mask. Well done, Tom. The franchise thanks you, the fans thank you, and Zombie-Jason thanks you.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-6-Lightning-1024x653.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7151\" width=\"362\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-6-Lightning-1024x653.png 1024w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-6-Lightning-300x191.png 300w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-6-Lightning-768x490.png 768w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-6-Lightning.png 1074w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>With Camp Forest Green, full of counselors and children, about to open, Jason has plenty of hapless victims to choose from, and for extra measure he offs some weekend warrior paintball players, two romantic couples, a cemetery caretaker, and a few police officers. Unfortunately, with Tommy being that notorious \u201ccrazy kid,\u201d he quickly gets blamed for the murders by hot-headed Sheriff Garris. Before you know it, he\u2019s in a jail cell. But thanks to Final Girl Megan, daughter of the sheriff, Tommy escapes to \u201cpermanently\u201d defeat Jason by drowning him in Crystal Lake (or rather, Lake Forest Green), with a weighted chain around his neck. Sure\u2026that\u2019ll work.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the strongest entries in the series. It\u2019s stylish, energetic, and full of intentional, sharp humor that actually lands. Thom Matthews is a bit stiff as Tommy, but he manages to pull off the character\u2019s desperate innocence. It\u2019s Jennifer Cooke (best known as the star-child in <em>V: The Series<\/em>) who really shines. Her smart and spunky Megan is second only to <em>Part 2<\/em>\u2019s Ginny; few Friday final girls have this much inherent charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-6-Megan-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7153\" width=\"352\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-6-Megan-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-6-Megan-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-6-Megan-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-6-Megan.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 352px) 100vw, 352px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The story moves at a brisk pace. The over-the-top kills are quick and discreet (sometimes due to MPAA-related edits) but they don\u2019t feel like cheats. Almost everything feels like its done with intent, so the result \u2014 while not as gory as expected \u2014 is effective. Most of the victims are likable and\/or entertaining, which is a nice course-correct after the bitchy crew of <em>Part V<\/em>\u2019s dumpster fire. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continuity is fluid. You can choose to believe that <em>Part V<\/em> happened, or that this is a soft reboot that directly follows <em>The Final Chapter<\/em>. Both paths work, and a line of dialogue early on (\u201cSeeing his corpse ain\u2019t gonna stop the hallucinations.\u201d) patches <em>Part V<\/em>\u2019s ending <em>and<\/em> Pam\u2019s attack\u2026if you need it to. Either way, there\u2019s another time-jump. Tommy now seems to be about 22 years old, putting these events even further in the future. This one takes place circa 1989 (in a 1986 theatrical release).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-6-Tommy-Driving.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7155\" width=\"358\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-6-Tommy-Driving.jpg 720w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-6-Tommy-Driving-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Jason is buried in the Eternal Peace Cemetery, a lovely piece of real estate compared to Mrs. Voorhees\u2019s crappy roadside plot. But who\u2019s <em>paying<\/em> for these graves and headstones? A scene that was scripted but never shot (but included in the novelization) reveals that Jason\u2019s father \u2014 Elias Voorhees \u2014 has been footing the bill for the graves and the upkeep. Elias never appears on screen, but his presence is felt a few sequels down the road. It\u2019s probably thanks to him that this supernatural stuff is happening in the first place. That whole <em>family<\/em> is an event.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crystal Lake is no more. Because of all the murder and mayhem, it\u2019s been renamed Forest Green. That doesn\u2019t last, for reasons I\u2019ll theorize about later, but despite the renaming, the story of Jason and his mom lives on. The minute Tommy identifies himself, everyone talks about What Happened Before like they\u2019ve been listening to a \u201cCamp Blood\u201d podcast. Hell, one character has even invented a card game devoted to the Jason legend.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-6-Battle.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7156\" width=\"358\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-6-Battle.jpg 700w, https:\/\/matt.doppiavvu.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Part-6-Battle-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first time, we see children at Crystal Lake (oops!) Forest Green. Little kids, in actual danger! It warms my heart. That aspect almost reminds me of 1982\u2019s <em>Madman<\/em> (which you guys should watch) which itself is similar to <em>The Burning<\/em> (which you guys should also watch).
